Many aspiring leaders struggle to become the leaders they want to become. It's a programme in the mindset that sabotages their success. Read on
Many organisations invest heavily in identifying and grooming their next generation of leaders. They put them through development programmes, leadership workshops, and mentoring schemes.
And yet, time and again, these aspiring leaders struggle to become the leaders they set out to be.
On paper, it all makes sense.
In practice, everything goes haywire.
Why?
Because the same old, outdated, unconscious programmes keep running in the background.
I once coached a manager who looked at me and sighed,
“You know, Andreas, I’m at my best behind my Excel spreadsheet.”
And there it was.
He was technically strong, diligent, and reliable. But leading people wasn’t just a skill gap - it was a mental model problem.
His identity and comfort zone were rooted in doing tasks, not leading humans.
Most managers start here.
They’re promoted for being effective operators - people who get things done.
They’re organised, detail-oriented, and great with processes. But once they step into leadership, the rules change.
Leadership isn’t about doing more.
It’s about thinking differently.
Instead of focusing on tasks, systems, and reports, effective leaders focus on people, meaning, and motivation.
And yet, no one really teaches this shift. No one knows how to initiate the shift!
No one helps them reprogram those deeply ingrained patterns - the habits of control, precision, and avoidance of emotional complexity.
When they finally realise that leadership is not about managing things but inspiring people, that’s when the real growth begins.
It doesn’t take years of retraining.
What it takes is awareness - from both the organisation and the aspiring leader - to recognise that mindset, not skillset, is what unlocks true leadership potential.
The moment that awareness clicks, everything else starts to align.
And that is where NLP shines the most because it does not only allow for the awareness creation, but takes it a step further.
There are many NLP Tools and techniques that can be taught to those aspiring leaders.
